How to live in acceptance

What this means is that whether I tell you to think of a blue car, or I tell you not to think of a blue car, either way the thought of a blue car will enter your mind! Try it and see for yourself. (Don’t think of a blue car… DO NOT think of a blue car…)

And the thing is, the more we try not to think of something, or to consider a specific undesirable outcome in our life, the more ‘power’ it gains over our thoughts. Remember all of the powerful resources it may have access to, within the deeper parts of our mind. This is the meaning of the principle – ‘what you resist, persists’.

Now some people spend their whole lives running away from and resisting certain feelings and experiences, but of course, the faster they run, and the more they try to avoid those feelings and experiences, the closer those things get. The answer? Stop running from your problems, and the perceived challenges (that might never even happen).

Instead, try a different angle: learn to accept the situation as it is, cultivate a state of inner calm about the whole thing, and from that place create the solution you’d like to have instead.

I used to worry frantically that if I didn’t make it as a successful Coach and Hypnotherapist, there’d be nothing else I could do that would make me feel happy. As a result of all this worrying, and pondering so many negative outcomes – I became quite unhappy!

Then I had a realisation. I considered the fact that I have loads of practical skills in life, in so many areas, which I could use to earn a living and ease the pressure somewhat. From there I could cultivate a greater sense of peace in my life, whilst exploring new (and perhaps, yet unthought of) avenues through which to offer my coaching services, for free if need be.

Immediately a ‘shift’ occurred for me, with a sense of upliftment and the realisation that the world wouldn’t in fact end, if I didn’t succeed the first time around with a highly successful business.

The secret here was to learn to accept, rather than resist. Resistance creates barriers, and acceptance brings flow.

So let’s turn this to you: ask yourself what thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences you have been resisting in life. Sit in a quiet place, take a few deep breaths, and relax. Then reflect on the situation as it exists, and ponder what would really happen if those situations were to occur. You will usually find that with increasing awareness into the ’emptiness’ of these things, the fear disperses, and a sense of ease, upliftment and flow take its place. From this place, true creativity can come.

Acceptance is also central to the concept of ‘living in the now’.

When we learn to move with flow and ease through life from moment to moment, we also become – despite the seeming paradox – far more productive in terms of achieving our desired goals and outcomes.

It is infinitely more effective to create and achieve the things we do want in life from this place of acceptance, inner calm and peace, than to spend our days running from the things that we don’t want. Think about that…
